Winter fence care tips and tricks for a sturdy fence

Christmas may be over, but winter is still here, bringing gusty winds, freezing temperatures, and, of course, wet weather. This is the time of year when your garden fencing really gets put to the test against the elements.
At Monton Fencing, we have over 30 years of experience providing exceptional quality fencing materials and timber for all kinds of landscaping and fencing projects. We specialise in garden fencing, gates, and timber, and we know just what it takes to help your fence through the worst of the wintery weather. So, here’s what you need to know!
Reinforce your fence
Winter weather can be brutal on your garden as a whole, and that includes your fencing. Freezing temperatures, snow, and strong winds can all cause damage. If you hear on the news that another storm is on the way, it’s a good idea to head out and do a quick check to see what you’re dealing with before it arrives. You might spot a bit of damage on your boards that you can patch up before the worst of the weather sets in, helping to prevent it from getting worse.
Keep an eye out for any loose or damaged posts, too. Over time, the freezing and thawing of the ground can cause posts to shift. Tighten up any bolts or screws that look like they may need it, and if you have a particularly damaged fence board or panel, you may want to replace it before it either falls apart or gets blown into your neighbour’s garden!
If you have a dog that goes out into the garden or small children who like to play outside, it’s even more important to keep your fence secure. Loose panels or gaps could create escape routes or safety hazards, so it’s best to address them as soon as you notice, even if it’s only for your peace of mind.
Keep an eye on your fence during storms
This one might seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning anyway: if the storm sets in and the weather turns particularly nasty, keeping an eye on your fence throughout is always a good idea, even if it’s just a glance out the window every so often. You might spot a tree branch hanging low, giving you a chance to safely remove it or redirect its fall before it damages your fence. Similarly, you could take a moment to move any heavy garden furniture or wheelie bins that might topple over and add further strain to your already weather-beaten fence.
After the storm has passed, take a moment to check over your fence. Look out for any standing water that might have pooled around the base of the posts – if it freezes, it could force them to move and over time lead to bigger problems. And if you spot any damage or issues while you’re at it, try to tackle them sooner rather than later – you don’t want to be left without a fence when the next storm rolls in!
Check on your gates and hinges
While you’re at it, don’t forget to pay attention to your gates, too. Cold, wet weather can make hinges stiff or even freeze them completely, so a quick spritz of oil or WD-40 will go a long way in keeping them moving. It’s worth testing your gates now and then to make sure they’re opening and closing without issue. If you notice any sagging or misalignment, it’s best to sort it out sooner rather than later. The snow and ice will only make things trickier to deal with.
Get ahead for spring
The more time you have to prepare your garden, the smoother the process will be. Plus, putting off repairs until spring could end up turning a small fix into a much bigger – and more expensive – job. It’s a good idea to tackle the little issues now while you can and save the larger projects, like painting or staining, for when the weather’s a bit more cooperative. If a new fence is on the cards for spring, though, there’s no harm in getting ahead of the game! Here at Monton Fencing, we have a fantastic range of sturdy and reliable fences, from timeless timber options to sleek, modern composite designs.
